Spring cleaning started a little early in the Detention Center. Last month Detention Lieutenants DJ Bowlin and Matt Hartzog, together with Captain Linda Carrow, began planning an ambitious project to repaint inmate housing units inside the Ashe County Detention Center. Due to over ten years of constant occupancy and use, the walls, floors, bunks, doors and benches in the housing units were in serious need of repainting.
Because six of our inmates stepped up and volunteered to do the actual painting, the cost for the project has been limited to just the supplies. These inmates were under no obligation to help us out but they each asked, as a way to break up the predictable boredom of being in jail, if they could help us out.
Closely supervised by our detention staff at all times, our six volunteers have been working together as a team for two weeks now and have become a well-oiled painting machine. We are not talking about a rush job of just slapping paint around either. These inmates have been cleaning and sanding walls, floors and railings. They’ve also been patching holes and painting with incredible attention paid to detail.
So far one of our four male housing units has been completed and it looks amazing. After seeing the job they did on the first unit, we felt it necessary to thank them for volunteering in our detention facility.
