•Annual leave earned: 6.667 hours per month at hire with increases based on years of service
•Sick leave earned: 8.0 hours per month
•Full-time employees are eligible for 13 paid holidays.
•Full-time employees are eligible for 100% employer paid health, dental and life insurance. Vision coverage is available with premium costs covered by employee.
•Supplemental insurances with AFLAC, Liberty, and Transamerica are also available to full-time employees with all costs covered by the employee.
•Flexible Spending Account benefits are also available for payment of medical expenses or dependent care through Flores & Associates, LLC with all pre-tax contributions made by the employee.
•1800MD, a tele-medicine program, is available free of charge to full-time employees and their family members who reside in their household.

•Ashe County contributes 10.21% of the non-sworn employees’ salary to the System and the employee will contribute 6%.

Law Enforcement

The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office is always accepting applications for full-time and part-time deputies. We keep our hiring process open at all times so that we never miss an opportunity to find the best and brightest to add to our team.

Our Deputy Sheriff’s have a wide variety of roles in which they can serve Ashe County. They can serve as uniformed patrol deputies, plain clothes detectives, K9 officers, undercover narcotics detectives, School Resource Officers, certified Law Enforcement Instructors or they can serve in our Civil division, perform courthouse security or become a sworn member of our Administration.

There are so many different facets to what we do that it keeps the job exciting and gives all of our sworn deputies an opportunity to find the right role for them.

DEPUTY SHERIFF (job description)-
Responds to and assumes initial control of crimes or incidents; determines need for additional personnel and/or supervisor. Performs general law enforcement duties as necessary, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the County, transporting inmates, checking residential and commercial properties for security, responding to public calls for assistance, maintaining order and public safety, processing crime scenes, apprehending and arresting criminal suspects and law violators, collecting evidence, conducting tests on persons suspected of DWI, participating in investigations, etc. Participates in special operations as needed, including but not limited to manhunts, surveillance, and undercover operations, evacuations, raids, ground searches and natural disaster operations. Prepares and obtains warrants and subpoenas in court cases; serves warrants, summons and civil process as needed. Prepares cases for prosecution; provides court testimony as necessary.

“Deputy Sheriff” means: any person who has been duly appointed and sworn by the sheriff and who is authorized to exercise the powers of arrest in accordance with the law of North Carolina.

Detention Officer

We understand that not everybody is cut out to work in a jail. Working in a detention center requires a special person who has the ability to operate under pressure, pay close attention to detail and manage the stresses and demands that detention work can bring. For the right person though, being a Detention Officer is an exciting and highly rewarding law enforcement career path.

Because we are always looking for the right candidates, with the right mindset and skills to serve our community as a Detention Officer, we keep the hiring process open at all times for full-time and part-time Detention Officers.

DETENTION OFFICER (job description)-
– The Detention Officer is responsible for the security, supervision and transportation of inmates in the Ashe County Detention Center. The Detention Officer performs a variety of duties; direct supervision of inmates, Booking desk duty, Control Tower operations and transportation of inmates inside and even outside of the detention center. The Detention Officer works under the direct supervision of that employee’s shift sergeant. Detention Officers must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts which includes nights, holidays and weekends.

DUTIES:

-Patrols the detention center, maintains head-counts of inmates, and maintains the security of gates and doors within and outside of the detention center.
-Answers the phone, files inmate folders ,maintain records of inmates’ visitation, showers, and other procedures.
-Processing new inmates, searching inmates, collection of personal property from inmates and advises all inmates of policies that govern their conduct while in the detention facility.
-Supervises the cleanliness of inmates, their quarters, the surrounding area, and their laundry.
-Assist in serving meals to inmates.
-Transports and escorts inmates to various locations
-Assist in controlling combative inmates
-Performs other duties and work as required

The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office requires all Detention Officers to attended and graduate from a recognized 174 hour D.O.C.C. (Detention Officer Certification Course) academy in North Carolina within the first year of their employment.

Candidates can be hired immediately in the Detention Center, even without D.O.C.C. school certification, but will have to be scheduled  for an upcoming D.O.C.C. class at Wilkes Community College within the first few months of their employment.

Ashe County Detention Officers must meet or exceed all basic, specialized and continuing education training as mandated by North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards.

“Detention Officer” means: any person performing responsibilities, either on a full-time, part-time, permanent or temporary basis, which include but are not limited to the control, care and supervision of any inmates incarcerated in a county jail or other confinement facility under the direct supervision and management of the sheriff. “Detention Officer” shall also mean the administrator and other custodial personnel of district confinement facilities as defined in G.S. 153A-219.

911 Dispatch

  • Working in our 911 Dispatch Center is one of the most demanding, and yet rewarding, roles at the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office. Our Telecommunicators are masters in multitasking and are truly the ‘first first responders’.  They have to have the ability to manage six computer screens, non emergency telephones calls, 911 calls, and police, fire and EMS radio traffic all at the same time.We won’t pretend that this job isn’t stressful, because it is. But those who rise to the top and can learn the craft and pass the myriad of schools and certifications that it takes to be a Telecommunicator with our agency will know that they are among the few that have risen to the challenge and become a critical component to our team at the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office.
    TELECOMMUNICATOR
    (job description)-– Receives routine and emergency telephone calls and personal request for assistance concerning crimes, fire, animal control, home health, or general information concerning addresses and nature of problems. Operates equipment to maintain contact with law enforcement personnel and other law enforcement units; dispatches deputies to answer requests for assistance; receives and transmits information and messages. Operates equipment to maintain contact with various personnel in dispatching fire departments, rescue squads, police departments, social services, juvenile officers, wrecker services, Red Cross, highway patrol, and emergency management personnel. Operates Division of Criminal Information (DCI) terminal to send and receive messages regarding criminal histories, vehicle identification, NCIC hot files, missing persons, license plate records, driver histories, and query system for pawn shop transactions, and related work. Maintains an in-house computer database and communications logs and reports including the nature of calls, actions taken and the times involved; and generates reports for recovered or stolen property, missing persons, and residence checks.
  • The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office requires all Telecommunicators to attended and graduate from a recognized Telecommunicator School in North Carolina within the first year of their employment.

Administrative

  • In addition to the positions of Deputy Sheriff, Detention Officer and Telecommunicator, the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office generally has a host of Administrative positions. These positions can be anything from working the evidence inventory, front desk reception, processing weapons permits, payroll and billing to grant writing and employee background checks. While these positions do not technically fall under the umbrella of North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards, the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office performs thorough background checks on all applicants and requires that all employees meet or exceed the same standards mandated by North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards.
