Well it’s that time of the year folks. The evenings are getting cooler, the leaves will be changing soon and the funny money is starting to roll into Ashe County.
Our office is filling evidence bags with fake cash seized during recent attempts to circulate counterfeit money right here in Ashe and we need your help.
We are asking that businesses here in Ashe stock up on counterfeit-marking pens and encourage your employees to use them as directed by the manufacturer during cash transactions. These pens are cheap (a pack of them generally runs less than $10.00) but can save you hundreds if it keeps your business from getting stuck with fake bills.
Residents are reminded that businesses are not the only ones vulnerable to being victims of counterfeit bills. Individuals selling items locally (like lawn equipment, vehicles, electronics, etc.) may also get stuck with a fist-full of worthless fake bills… a pretty sad exchange for their Xbox or deer stand.
If you suspect a counterfeit note or have information about counterfeiting activity, please report it immediately to our office and follow these tips:
1) Do not put yourself in danger.
2) Do not return the bill to the passer.
3) Delay the passer with some excuse, if possible.
4) Observe the passer’s description – and their companions’ descriptions – and write down their vehicle license plate numbers if you can.
5) Contact your local law enforcement agency (that’s us).
6) Write your initials and date in the white border area of the suspected counterfeit note.
7) DO NOT handle the counterfeit note. Place it inside a protective cover, a plastic bag, or envelope to protect it until you place it in the hands of an IDENTIFIED local law enforcement officer.
Please Note: There is no financial remuneration for the return of the counterfeit bill, but it is doing the “right thing” to help combat counterfeiting.
