In a ceremony held this year in New Bern, Sheriff Howell and his family received his graduate certificate from the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute.
The Sheriff’s Leadership Institute is a series of courses that occurred beginning in 2018 and completed in 2020. As an optional program, Sheriff Howell felt it necessary to participate and excel in the Leadership Institute in order to better lead Ashe County in a fresh direction. During the institute, Sheriff Howell not only learned crucial leadership skills, but also some very tangible technical skills that have been brought back and implemented in our sheriff’s office. While it furthers the knowledge, skills and abilities of the Sheriff’s Office, the courses also provide specific technical skills for a new Sheriff when assuming the Office of the Sheriff.
“In addition to the management and leadership skills I was able to pick up at the Sheriff’s Leadership Institute, the relationships I was able to form along the way with both former and sitting North Carolina Sheriffs has proven to be extremely useful. Mostly what the Leadership Institute taught me was that while I may not always have the right answers, I always know where to find them. I find those answers by listening to the people I love, the people who I’m honored to lead and you, the people who elected me to be your Sheriff”. ~ Sheriff Howell
